How to check Income Tax Return (ITR) Status ?

1. Check the ITR Status (Post Login)


Once the taxpayer files the income tax return, it is important to track its status to ensure it is successfully filed, verified and processed.

   NOTE

W.e.f AY 2024-25, ITD has removed the "ITR Status Check" pre login mode. Now the taxpayers must log in to the Income Tax portal to check the status of their filed ITR.

  1. Login to https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
  2. Go to e-File>Income Tax Returns>View Filed Returns
  3. You will be able to see all the returns filed by you. Click on View Details (on right hand side) to check Check ITR Status post login Showing the screen to view all the ITR filings filed by you or through ERI.
  4. The ITR Status should look like this Check ITR Status post loginScreen to view the ITR Status.

2. Where to find acknowledgement number?

You may get the acknowledge number in three ways

  1. After completion of filing the return, ITD (Income Tax Department) sends an eMail with ITR-V attachment that includes a 15 digit acknowledgement number
  2. If you eFile with EZTax.in, EZTax.in sends an email to your registered email with an Acknowledgement number (check your inbox for "EZTax.in | eFiled Successfully")
  3. In addition, login to EZTax.in Income Tax Portal > Click on the eFiled Service from the Dashboard to find the acknowledgement number.

3. How to read ITR Status ?


  1. Submitted and pending for e-verification: It means you have filed your income tax returns, but you have not e-verified it electronically or manually by sending acknowledgement to the department.
  2. If you have not e-verified yet, you may choose from 6 different options to e-Verify now. More @ Income Tax Return Verification

  3. Successfully e-verified: It means you have filed and successfully e-verified your return, but the ITR has not been processed yet.
  4. Processed: It means the return is successfully processed by Income Tax Department without any discrepancies.
  5. Defective: It means the income tax returns haven’t been filed in accordance with provisions of the law. "If your return is found defective then you will receive a notice of defective return under section 263(9) of IT Act 2025 (section 139(9) of IT Act 1961) asking you to rectify the defect within 15 days from the date of receiving notice.   6. Case transferred to Assessing Officer: 'Case transferred to AO' means the Centralized Processing Centre of the Income Tax Department has transferred the ITR to the jurisdictional assessing officer to process it.
