1.What is the definition of MSME for the enterprises engaged in production, processing or preservation of goods?

MSME means Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises as per MSMED act. The definition varies between Goods and Services. The definition from the Goods perspective is

  1. Micro Enterprises: A micro enterprise is an enterprise where investment in plant and machinery does not exceed Rs. 25 lakhs
  2. Small Enterprises: A small enterprise is an enterprise where the investment in plant and machinery is more than Rs. 25 lakhs but does not exceed Rs. 5 crores
  3. Medium Enterprises: A medium enterprise is an enterprise where the investment in plant and machinery is more than Rs. 5 crore but does not exceed Rs.10 crore

2.What is the definition of MSME for the enterprises engaged in providing or rendering of services?

​​​​ Per MSMED act, the definition from the Services perspective is

  1. Micro Enterprises: A micro enterprise is an enterprise where investment in equipment does not exceed Rs. 10 lakhs
  2. Small Enterprises: A small enterprise is an enterprise where the investment in equipment is more than Rs. 10 lakhs but does not exceed Rs. 2 crores
  3. Medium Enterprises: A medium enterprise is an enterprise where the investment in equipment is more than Rs. 2 crore but does not exceed Rs. 5 crore

3.What type of entities can register for MSME?

The following enterprises can register for MSME

  1. Manufacturing Enterprises: The enterprises engaged in the manufacture to production of goods pertaining to any industry or employing plant & machinery in the process of value addition to the final product can register under MSME
  2. Service Enterprises: The enterprises engaged in providing or rendering of services can register under MSME.

4.How is the investment in plant & machinery by manufacturing enterprises is calculated?

The investment in plant & machinery is the original cost excluding land and building and the items specified by the Ministry of Small-Scale Industries.

5.How is the investment in equipment by Service enterprises is calculated?

The investment in plant & machinery is the original cost excluding land and building, furniture & fittings and other items not directly related to the service rendered.

6.Are the startups eligible to be registered as MSME to get the Udyog Aadhaar?

Per the act there are no restrictions as such but should fit into the general Goods, Services, and Revenue definition.
