IEC is a unique 10-digit code issued by DGFT to a person. IEC is mandatory to export any goods out of India or to import any goods into India unless specifically exempt. Permanent Account Number (PAN) is pre-requisite for grant of an IEC.
Importer Exporter code (IEC) once allotted by DGFT is valid for Life time. No renewal is required for IEC.
No, the importer or exporter is not required to file any kind of IEC returns.
The following are the benefits of IEC
If an IEC holder does not want to operate the IEC, he may surrender the IEC by informing the issuing authority. The issuing authority shall immediately cancel it and electronically transmit it to DGFT and customs authority.
