1.What is Importer-Exporter Code (IEC)?

IEC is a unique 10-digit code issued by DGFT to a person. IEC is mandatory to export any goods out of India or to import any goods into India unless specifically exempt. Permanent Account Number (PAN) is pre-requisite for grant of an IEC.

2.What is the validity of IEC?

Importer Exporter code (IEC) once allotted by DGFT is valid for Life time. No renewal is required for IEC.

3.Does the importer or exporter registered under IEC is required to file returns?

No, the importer or exporter is not required to file any kind of IEC returns.

4.What are the benefits of IEC?

The following are the benefits of IEC

5.How to surrender IEC Number?

If an IEC holder does not want to operate the IEC, he may surrender the IEC by informing the issuing authority. The issuing authority shall immediately cancel it and electronically transmit it to DGFT and customs authority.

6.Who is not required to obtain IEC?

The following persons are not required to obtain IEC

  1. Persons importing/exporting goods for personal use and not for business purpose.
  2. Departments or Ministries of Central / State government.
  3. Persons importing/exporting goods from/to Nepal or Myanmar through Indo-Myanmar border areas where CIF value of a single consignment does not exceed Rs 25000.
7.What is ANF 2A?

ANF 2A is the application form for issue or modification in Import Exporter code.
