Professional Tax in Maharashtra

Self-employed, salaried individuals and companies are liable to pay professional tax on their income in Maharashtra. While this is true for every state, in Maharashtra every company must go through Professional Tax Certification and proper deduction from the salaried individuals.

1. How to deduct Professional Tax (PT)?

  1. If you are a salaried individual, the profession tax will be automatically deducted from your salary and the aggregate tax shall be paid by the employer.
  2. In the case of non- salaried individuals, it can be paid online.

2. Professional Tax Slab Rates

The latest profession tax slab rates as prescribed by the Government of Maharashtra are as follows

Professional tax registration certificate (PTRC) is to be obtained by the company in the role of Employer. Professional tax Enrolment certificate (PTEC) is to obtained by the company for its own existence and any subsidiary engaging in the profession (and off-course business) within the state of Maharashtra.

3. How to Pay Maharashtra Profession Tax Online?

  • Visit Maharashtra Government's GST Portal: https://www.mahagst.gov.in/en
  • Click on e-Payments and select the option which is applicable as per the status of your profession tax payment.
  • Kindly select TIN/PAN/TAN number, as applicable and enter the respective number along with the captcha shown in the image.
  • Now, select the Act under which you want to make the payment. For profession tax, it should be either PTRC Act or PTEC Act.
  • Please enter other details like financial year, period for which profession tax needs to be paid, location, amount (as per the slab rate) and the mobile number. Now, click on Proceed to Payment option.
  • You can make the payment online using your credit/debit card or net banking. Once you have made the payment successfully, an acknowledgement receipt will be generated which you can download for further reference.
