How Are Sovereign Gold Bonds Taxed on Redemption and Sale?
Sovereign Gold Bond taxation depends on how the bond was acquired and how it is exited. From tax year 2026-27, the capital-gains exemption for redemption at maturity is specifically tied to an individual subscribing at original issue and holding the bond continuously until maturity.
Quick Answer
In practical terms, Sovereign Gold Bond taxation depends on how the bond was acquired and how it is exited. From tax year 2026-27, the capital-gains exemption for redemption at maturity is specifically tied to an individual subscribing at original issue and holding the bond continuously until maturity.
Maturity redemption
Finance Act 2026 amended the SGB redemption exemption. From 1 April 2026, the exemption is available where the individual subscribed to the SGB at the time of original issue and held it continuously until maturity.
Secondary-market purchase
An SGB purchased through a secondary-market transaction does not qualify for the maturity-redemption exemption under the amended rule. A sale or redemption therefore needs to be analysed under the applicable capital-gains provisions.
Premature redemption
The 2026 clarification states that premature redemption is not eligible for the exemption, even if the prescribed lock-in period has been completed. The maturity condition is important.
What about interest?
The capital-gains exemption for qualifying maturity redemption should not be confused with the taxation of interest received on the SGB. Interest and capital-gains treatment are separate tax questions.
Example
An individual who subscribed to an SGB at original issue and continuously held it until maturity can generally claim the specified redemption exemption. If the same individual bought the SGB from another investor in the secondary market, the exemption does not apply merely because the bond was eventually redeemed.
