Why residential status matters

ITR-1 and ITR-4 have specific resident-status restrictions. An RNOR or non-resident generally cannot use these simplified forms. ITR-2 and ITR-3 can apply to resident and non-resident individuals, subject to their other conditions.

Why income type matters

Short-term capital gains, business/professional income, foreign income or assets, unlisted equity shares, directorship and other conditions can move a taxpayer out of ITR-1. Business/professional income then requires examination of ITR-3 versus ITR-4.

Use the Income Tax Department's ITR selector

The e-Filing portal has a “Help me decide which ITR form to file” service that uses qualifying conditions to help an individual determine the applicable ITR and schedules.
