Why Does AIS Not Show My Income?

AIS is based on information reported or available through the Income Tax Department’s information systems. Income that is not shown in AIS may still be taxable and must be considered when preparing a complete and accurate ITR.

Quick Answer

AIS should not be treated as a complete record of all taxable income. Missing AIS information does not remove the taxpayer's responsibility to report the income correctly.

Does AIS Contain All My Income?

No. Taxpayers should not assume that AIS is a complete substitute for their own income records. AIS contains information available to the tax department through specified reporting and information sources.

Why Might Income Be Missing?

Information may not appear because it has not been reported, is not covered by the relevant reporting mechanism, is not yet available in the system, or differs in timing from the taxpayer’s own records.

What Should I Do If My Income Is Missing?

Identify the income from your own records and determine the applicable tax treatment. Use AIS as an information and reconciliation source, not as the sole basis for deciding what income to report.

Examples of Income to Reconcile Separately

Depending on the taxpayer, this may include business or professional income, certain investment transactions, foreign income, rental income, or other amounts that may not be fully represented in AIS.

Important

The absence of an amount from AIS does not make the income non-taxable. The taxpayer remains responsible for complete and accurate income reporting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave out income because it is not in AIS?

No. The ITR should be prepared using complete and accurate income information, not only the entries visible in AIS.

Should I wait for AIS to update before filing?

Not necessarily. Consider the complete records available to you and the applicable filing requirements and deadlines.

Why is my bank interest missing from AIS?

The reason can vary. Check the relevant bank records, tax statements, and reporting information rather than assuming that the income does not need to be reported.
