What Is an Updated Return (ITR-U)?

An updated return, commonly called ITR-U, is a statutory mechanism for taxpayers to update an earlier return or file a return in specified circumstances, subject to additional tax and other conditions. It is different from a revised return and cannot generally be used simply to claim a larger refund or reduce tax liability.

Quick Answer

In practical terms, An updated return, commonly called ITR-U, is a statutory mechanism for taxpayers to update an earlier return or file a return in specified circumstances, subject to additional tax and other conditions. It is different from a revised return and cannot generally be used simply to claim a larger refund or reduce tax liability.

ITR-U versus revised return

A revised return corrects an already filed return within the revised-return period. An updated return is a separate statutory mechanism with its own time limit, additional tax and restrictions.

Can I file ITR-U if I did not file the original return?

The Income Tax Department states that updated returns can be available whether or not the taxpayer has furnished an original, belated or revised return, subject to the statutory conditions.

What cannot an updated return do?

The updated-return provisions restrict outcomes such as increasing a loss, reducing total tax liability or increasing a refund. The taxpayer must also pay the prescribed additional income tax.

New Act versus AY 2026-27

For AY 2026-27, the Income Tax Department has explained that the Income Tax Act 1961 continues to govern the relevant assessment year. The new Income Tax Act 2025 contains updated-return provisions for later tax years.
