1. What is Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?

  • Digital Signature Certificate is the digital equivalent of paper or physical signs.
  • Digital Signature certificate (DSC) is a secure and authentic way to submit a document electronically.
  • The short form and common name of the Digital Signature Certificate is "DSC"
  • Digital signatures use encryption technology to provide authenticity, integrity, and non-repudiation for electronic documents and transactions.

2. When do you need DSC and alternatives?

Digital Signature Certificates (DSC) are required for authorized online submissions on government platforms like the Income Tax e-Filing portal, Goods and Services Tax (GST) portal, Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) portal, Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), and various e-procurement systems.

 Aadhaar eSign as an alternative to DSC

The 2015 Gazette Notification - GSR 61(E) incorporated Aadhaar eSign into the Information Technology (IT) Act as a valid electronic signature.

While the government has plans to do a complete transition to "Aadhaar eSign" in future, including but not limited to MCA / ROC compliance etc., this document covers only DSC.

What is Aadhaar eSign? A cloud-enabled service / framework that uses a one-time password (OTP) or biometric authentication linked to an Aadhaar number to sign documents in a quick, easy, and practical manner, with an expirable token, no physical token to purchase, works on your mobile, and is completely free to use.

Department of Finance department already uses one form of aadhaar based OTP to e-verify Income Tax Returns (ITR), GST Returns (GSTR) etc.

3. Who issues Digital Signature Certificate?

  • Digital signature certificates in India are issued by Certifying Authorities (CA)
  • The Certifying Authorities (CA) are licensed and regulated by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) under the Information Technology Act 2000
  • The CCA issues certificates to CA’s and CA’s issues Digital signature certificates to end users

6. Types of Digital Signature certificates

Digital signature certificates are classified based on their usage and level of security. The types of digital signature certificates are as follows:


  • Signature (Sign) DSC:

    • It is used for signing documents to authenticate the identity of the signer and confirm that the document has not been altered after signing.
    • Sign DSC is used for following purposes

      • Income Tax Returns filing
      • GST filing
      • ROC Filing
      • Trademarks filings
      • Signing of documents and agreements
    • Sign DSC is used mostly by individuals, professionals, directors and authorized signatories

  • Encrypt DSC:

    • Encrypt DSC is used to secure confidential data by converting it into an encrypted format. Only the recipient with the correct decryption key can access and read the original information
    • Encrypt DSC is used for below purposes

      • E-Tender and E-Procurement
      • Business communication
      • Corporate and Financial Transactions
      • Government and Regulatory Filings
    • Encrypt DSC is mostly used by banking systems, Government, defense, corporates etc

  • Sign and Encrypt DSC:

    • Sign and Encrypt DSC are used for document signing and data encryption in single certificate
    • Sign and Encrypt DSC are used for corporate regulatory filings, e tendering, Government project documentation etc.
    • This DSC is mostly used by Government vendors and contractors, organizations handling confidential filings etc.

  • DGFT DSC:

    • DGFT DSC is used for transactions on the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) portal.
    • DGFT DSC is used for IEC Code registration, DGFT license application, export -import documentation and foreign trade compliance filings
    • DGFT DSC is used by importers, exporters, foreign trade consultants and international business entities

7. Classes and Validity of Digital Signature Certificate

  • Usage of Class II DSC has been stopped from Jan 2021, and Usage of Class 3 Digital Signature has been made mandatory for the individuals and organizations.
  • The validity of class 3 Digital signature is 1-3 years depending on the subscription period selected.

8. Precautions While Using Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)

Proper handling of DSC is important to prevent misuse and maintain security.

  • Never share your DSC token password with anyone
  • Always keep the USB token in safe custody
  • Use DSC only for authorized transactions
  • Avoid using DSC in public or untrusted computers

At present, ROC filings with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) mandate the use of Digital Signature Certificates (DSC). With ongoing digital transformation initiatives, there is an expectation that DSC requirements may be streamlined in the future.

Additionally, DSC continues to be mandatory for specific Income-tax compliances, including filings by companies and filings by firms/LLPs that are subject to audit requirements.
